JEFFERSON CITY, MO., JULY 16, 2008 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will hold an informational meeting Monday, July 28 to discuss issues related to Deutschheim State Historic Site in Hermann. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the site's Stark House, which located at 109 West 2nd St.
Representatives from the historic site will address the activity at the site in the past year and proposed plans for the future. The public is invited to share comments and ask questions about the facility and its services.
The informational meeting is part of an ongoing effort by the department to ensure that the public has input on services offered in state parks and historic sites.
Persons requiring special services or accommodations to attend the meeting can make arrangements by calling Deutschheim State Historic Site at 573-486-2200 or the department toll free at 800-334-6946 (voice) or 800-379-2419 (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf). Deutschheim State Historic Site captures the culture and heritage of the German people who migrated to Missouri in the mid- to late-19th century. Their home interiors, tools, implements, garden plantings and architecture quickly became a reflection of Missouri's diverse culture.
The Pommer-Gentner house, built in 1840, is a sterling example of high-style German neoclassicism and is furnished to reflect the earlier settlement period of the 1830s and 1840s. Behind the house, visitors will tour a period garden and a small half-timbered barn containing an exhibit of 19th century tools.
The Strehly house, built in stages from 1842 to 1869, has a traditional German vernacular front. It once contained a full-service printing company that produced a German-language newspaper. About 1857, Carl Strehly built a winery next to the house that today displays one of a few remaining carved wine casks in the Midwest. Grapevines, planted by the Strehlys in the 1850s, can still be seen running the length of the backyard.
Deutschheim's varied collections of German Americana are represented by galleries of changing artifacts and photographs. Tour Deutschheim's buildings and experience the daily life of German Americana the way it really happened 150 years ago!

"Mood Elevators" at the Amphitheatre

July 26, 7 p.m. Free concert at the amphitheatre featuring the Mood Elevators and Plaid Wallace, providing a variety of musical entertainment.

The Clara Eitmann Messmer Amphitheatre was dedicated Monday, May 31, 2006, located on Gutenberg Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets. The amphitheatre is the result of a very generous donation from Clara Messmer. It was out of the desire and generosity of Mrs. Messmer, who wanted to return something to Hermann, that this facility has become a reality. The retired school teacher once said she was never a musician, but like going to band concerts like the ones put on by the local band.

Theater grounds currently feature lawn seating only. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Persons are also invited to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy before the performances. Many thanks to the dedicated members of the Hermann Arts Council for their hard work in bringing us the 2008 concert schedule .

Hermann, Missouri - Hermann's Showboat Community Theatre presents "Ravenscroft," an intriguing murder mystery by Don Nigro.

The Gypsy Theatre Company is a traveling company from New York presenting this entertaining performance at the Showboat for a limited run of just two nights, Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18. This funny and suspenseful mystery is set in an English country estate in 1905. On a dark and snowy night, Police Inspector Ruffing is called to the estate to investigate the fatal plunge of Patrick Roarke down the main staircase. Ruffing becomes involved in the lives of five alluring and dangerous women who lead the inspector through a bewildering labyrinth of contradictory versions of the deaths of both Patrick Roarke and the late Mr. Ravenscroft.

There are ghosts on the staircase and skeletons in the closet. The inspector’s investigation leads him into his own tortured soul and a dark encounter with the truth.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 17, and Friday, July 18. Prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Advance tickets are available at the Hermann Welcome Center. Advance tickets are $9.

In cooperation with area restaurants, the Showboat offers a box office special: Bring a receipt from any area restaurant dated the day of the show, and get $1 off your ticket at the box office.

Terry and Rick are our July Featured Guests . During their stay in Hermann last weekend they visited the local shops, Hermannhof's Hofgarten and had dinner at Trapper's Grill and Stone Hill's Vintage Restaurant.

"We thoroughly enjoyed having them as our guests. They are both from the same area of St. Louis where I used to live and our conversations about the neighborhoods brought back fond memories of living near them in Shrewsbury."

They are planning a return trip in October and we hope that we have the beautiful panoramic fall scene we have become famous for.

For those of you who visit Hermann Missouri on a regular basis or those of you who have never been to Hermann you will want to spend some time touring one of Hermann's Best Kept Secrets of 2008...Hermannhof Hofgarten. Hermannhof Hofgarten is one of several projects sponsored by the Hermann Farm Charitable Foundation.

The Hofgarten at First and Gutenberg, is an exhibition center designed to accommodate ethnic music and arts, craft demonstrations and other educational programs celebrating the unique spirit and German heritage of historic Hermann.

Two “German-stable” inspired pavilions define the interior courtyard, much like a European public square, and feature brick and cobblestone paving and limestone fountains.

Ceremonial iron gates with brick piers and topped with decorative deer enclose the Hofgarten and enhance the park-like setting. The pavilions feature old-world brick, stone and timber detailing, copper roofs, and hand-crafted wrought iron lighting. The Hofgarten also features an eighteen foot tall half-timbered centerpiece cupola.
Guests of the Hofgarten will also enjoy the view of scenic Frene Creek, historic stone farm houses, hillside vineyards, and all of the natural beauty and charm of Historic Hermann.

Once again our wonderful Chamber of Commerce, City of Hermann Mayor and personnel provided our community with a spectacular fireworks display making this years Fourth of July '08 celebration an "explosive" success.
Hundreds of guests and locals watched from Riverfront park as the northeastern sky was filled with hundreds of explosions...ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!

I begain recommending Oak Glenn Vineyards & Winery to all my B & B guests in 2006 because they are open 7 days per week and always have high caliber bands nearly every Saturday during our tourist season (May-Nov) .

This weekend on Saturday, July 5th they will be featuring music by Wildcard from 6-10 pm. They are featuring live music and entertainment every weekend through October.

I can't say enough good things about OakGlenn and their employees. Recently, on a slow weekday two of my B & B guests arrived at their vineyard after hours and they were greeted by a kind employee (...maybe the owner...?) who showed them around and was very gracious and accomodating. My guests were absolutely thrilled by his hospitality. Its hospitality like this that Hermann has always been famous for and endeavors to maintain.

HISTORY
Hermann, The Missouri River town in Gasconade County, is cupped against the background of 300 foot hills. The early houses are set against the sidewalk with neat lawns and flower gardens which give the city an old world charm.
The German Settlement Society of Philadelphia was organized on August 27, 1836 after having first met at the Penn Hotel, Laetetia Court, Market Street, Philadelphia on May 7th of that same year. The German people were anxious to preserve their language, customs and way of life in this new land. Three deputies were sent out to find this land in the Far West while the Society started selling share in the project.
When the deputies returned they strongly recommended the area along the Gasconade River, no doubt because it reminded them of their homeland along the Rhine and Weser. George Bayer, a school teacher, was sent to buy the land. While he was doing this the Society planned the city of Hermann, named the streets and laid out parks etc. Bayer purchased 11,012.5 acres in Gasconade County for $13,765.68. Most of the land he bought was along the mouth and valley of Frene Creek and at Oldenberg (Stolpe).
With an eagerness that almost seems unnatural the first immigrants, seventeen people, arrived December 6, 1837. George Bayer, who had been appointed general agent, became ill at Pittsburg and could not continue the journey. This delay caused great inconvenience for the people who arrived here and had to spend the first winter in shelters on the banks of the Missouri.
When Bayer arrived in the spring of 1838 he found the people sound of body but not content in mind.
By May of 1839 there were 450 people in Hermann, ninety houses, five stores, two hotels and a post office established in 1838.
